The Perfect Example
As followers of Jesus we obviously want to become more like him. We want to speak, act, think and be like the Perfect Example that he was and is.
But how do we do this?
It’s a question that we seem to wrestle with a lot! Most sermons usually revolve around this question. Most discussions in our small groups are about working out what we should do/be like in certain situations. Our Bible reading notes are about becoming more like Christ.
It’s a massively important question.
But there’s a danger when this becomes the central focus of all our energies.
Our faith is about a relationship. A relationship with the Perfect Example. And if we get hung up on trying harder and harder to be better people, we need to remember what Richard Foster says… that it’s not about trying to be good and kind, but it’s about spending time with the One who makes us good and kind. In other words, hanging out with Jesus will transform us. We see it in his encounters with individuals and communities in the Gospels.
In Romans 12:2 Paul says “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” In the World we strive to excel and move forward and improve. But as followers of Jesus this transformation comes through the renewing of our minds. This renewal helps us to determine what God’s will is - helps us to work out how to act in certain situations - helps us to become more like the Perfect Example. And how do we get this renewal? Maybe it’s by hanging out with Jesus. Have you hung out with him lately?
